MiniCon Story

From David:

Hey y’all, here’s story from my experience at Mini-Con.

Besides experiencing scores of benevolent, smart people at Mini-Con and having many poignant and interesting conversations, one moment stood out in the Intellectual Property class. After many strongly (and kindly) expressed thoughts on the subject by many people, one Objectivist openly changed his mind in front of the class. A. had strenuously said that the first person to apply for a patent must be the only one to get the patent rights, even if others had independently created the same invention but had simply not made it to the patent office first. After hearing many thoughtful comments on how patents are meant to protect specific human-created property and how laws could be put in place to ensure that those who applied afterward did indeed invent the same thing independently, A. agreed that he needed to slightly alter his previous conclusion on IP. For many in the class, A’s openly honest review of his thoughts and benevolent change of mind represented the best in what Objectivism is all about: the furtherance of human happiness – and not simply being right in an argument. Kudos to A. and all in the class who expressed so well the kindness and inspiration of objectively lived lives.
